The Ship

The Capua was a small cargo ship, with a tonnage of 400 tons, a length of 45 meters. and a width of less than 8 meters.The ship was built at the beginning of the past century by the shipyard Wood Skinner & Co. of Newcastle in the UK, and for cases of life during the Second World War was used against England, not as a combat unit but as a support.
It sank during a mission, on April 27th 1943,while carrying arms for the Italian troops in Africa from Trapani to Tripoli.Due to a fire on board there was a violent explosion.
All crew, including Commander, survived but the ship sank about ten hours later, on a sandy bottom at about 38 metersdepth, in front of the bay "Mazzo di Sciacca" currently within the reserve-oriented Zingaro.
These are the facts, regards the origin of fire there is no clear evidence, some rumors want the fire caused by the crew tired from the long conflict, according to other evidence it seems that the fire was caused anyway by the crew but due to the sighting of a British submarine.
What happened, as in many cases, we will never know, but this only adds a touch of mystery to the charm of the dive on the wreck of Capua.

The dive

Usually the buoy is set on the bow of the wreck, about 28 m. . During the descent we will begin to see the deck, or rather the skeleton of the deck because in more than sixty years underwater wooden structures does not exist anymore and now through the metal beams you can see the cabins of the forecastle .
The dive continues in the direction of the stern, after few meters there is the entry of the hold, quite dark and muddy, but sometimes the slalom between the supports of the deck allows the encounter with lobsters. Continuing with the left shoulder to the side of the wreck on the bottom at about 35 meters there are same scrap of the wreck with moray eels and conger eels. Congers are in fact one of the attractions of this wreck, but the biggest are not among those scrap a few feet further towards the stern.
Through the open, done by the violent explosion that followed the fire, we have access in the belly of the wreck, a net of pipes, plates and cables covered with rust opens in front of an old work bench with his clamp still in place, behind the work bench it seems to see the tools still hanged and ordered, a frozen snapshot from the last century.
Here it is easy to meet larger conger eels that live in the wreck ( watch the video ).
From here we can get in another hold cleaner and smaller of the other one, ascending towards the light we will be again on the deck almost on the stern, the propeller and rudder are not in place and slowly return to the buoy swimming over the whole wreck.
